Oz’s Top 10

Overlanding Perks Pt. I”

Apparently, Top 10 lists are cool—at least according to blogs and websites—so I figured I’d give it a go.

Mine looks a little different than my parents’. Theirs are all about crazy jungle adventures and hippy-dippy nature experiences with birds and weird mammals. I don’t get to participate in all of those. Something about snakes… or being stolen by locals. (Okay, those are legit concerns, I guess.) But I do get to do a lot. So here it is—my Top 10 so far:

#1. The COCONUTS!
I’m obsessed. The juice (no, not with one of those biodegradable straws that don’t work), the flesh, the shells, even the coconut hair—I love it all. Best part? When my mom moisturizes with coconut oil and drops little pieces on the floor. Jackpot.

#2. Sleeping on the Bed in the Camper
This trip started strong when I realized I’d get to sleep on the bed. But now? I’m on top of the collapsible shower and toilet. Which sometimes gets used at night. While I’m sleeping. Yeah.

#3. Teaching Other Dogs to Play
Local dogs don’t always know how to play. Maybe they had tough puppyhoods. I’m doing my best to teach them. I consider it a public service.

#4. The Boat Trips
Didn’t think I’d like boats, but turns out—I love ‘em. The river ride to that uncrowded Mayan ruin? Epic. And the Golfo Dulce tour? Even better.

#5. The Beach
Don’t get to run wild on the beach all the time, but when I do? Pure magic. Black sand, white sand—I don’t discriminate.

#6. Quality Time with My Parents
Best part of this whole trip. I’m rarely alone. We’re a pack again.

#7. The Connections
One of my goals this trip was to build a broader community. Mission: underway. I’ve made so many cool (and occasionally weird) dog friends—some just for a moment, others for a few days.

#8. The Crazy Campsites
So many great ones, but a few were off the charts. Like that huge campground in Chetumal—right on the water, with pelicans flying overhead while I swam out over and over for my frisbee.

#9. Diverse Food
This is new: getting the same stuff my parents eat. The sausage in Guatemala? Unreal. The steak in Nica? Chef’s kiss.

#10. The Mountains (and A/C!)
The beach is great, but when it’s hot and humid, I can’t sleep. My nose gets hot, I pant all night—it’s a thing. That’s why I love our mountain escapes. And the rare air-conditioned room? Heaven.

That’s it for now! I’m sure this list will evolve, and I’ll keep you posted. Coconuts will probably stay at the top, though. Let’s be real.
