The Feel of Overlanding in Europe

The Feel of Overlanding in Europe
“A Different Experience”
From the moment we crossed the border in Mexico to the moment we reached the tip of South America, the Panamerican was an adventure. Not only did we have the opportunity to pursue some of the best adventures in the world in 14 different countries, but the trip itself was an adventure as we moved from place to place, overcoming the logistical and psychological challenges that are part of any off the beaten path overland journey.
Overlanding through Europe is a much different experience. There are plenty of logistical challenges, from buying an overland vehicle to dealing immigration issues from finding places to camp. But Europe is not South America. There are few wilderness areas and no real indigenous communities. And the psychological stress you will experience may be more related to spending too much time in more crowded and expensive cities and towns than traveling through remote regions. In addition, since many overlanders are heading in different directions, it’s difficult to build bonds with other overlanders who are sharing your experience.

A Different Experience
As a result, when exploring Europe, you have to create your own adventure that is aligned with your own goals. In our case, our goals include immersing ourselves in “culturally distinct” communities and pursuing outdoor adventures including biking, birding, climbing, hiking, scuba diving and skiing adventures. As a result, we have chosen to spend less time going from place to place and seeing the things that many overlanders will say that you “have to see” and more time exploring and pursuing outdoor adventures in less popular regions, even if they aren’t really “off the beaten path”. Our theory is that this approach will enable us to have a more enjoyable and rewarding experience. But only time will tell how this experience really feels.
