When Life Isn’t Perfect
“The Ups and Downs of Overlanding as a Dog”
When we lived in Boulder, my life was pretty comfortable. I had a big house to lounge in, a big yard (with a doggie door) to chase squirrels and poop at my leisure, and I got daily walks around Wonderland Lake and my mom’s favorite tree, which for some reason she liked to hug and talk to. But I knew that my mom and dad were restless and wanted to pursue a life of adventure, which I had already gotten a big taste of during our trip from Colorado to Argentina.
As I learned on that trip, life on the road isn’t always perfect. After a few rainy weeks in France, we finally got to do some amazing hiking on the Costa Brava in Spain. But then I found myself back in an Airbnb in another city, where the weather was horrible and my adventures consisted of walking my mom to her guitar and dance lessons with my rain jacket on. Despite the fact that cities are a bit of a sufferfest for me, we were still together, and I knew that my mom’s dancing (which drives me crazy) and guitar strumming (which I like) were bringing her a lot of joy. So overall, I was happy.

The Ups and Downs of Overlanding as a Dog
After almost two months in Spain, we finally escaped the weather to Morocco.
The trip involved a harrowing ferry crossing. I got left in the van while my mom and dad got their passports stamped, and they were stopped from coming back to me because it was too dangerous to walk across the rocking, wet deck of the ferry. But now we’re finally relaxing in the sun at a campground near Marrakesh, and I’m looking forward to better weather, new smells, and exploring another country. I still miss chasing squirrels, but lying in the sun with two happy parents feels like a pretty good trade.
