Our New South Wales and Queensland, Australia Favorite Adventures
Our dream is to return to Australia someday to spend at least a year exploring the country in a 4WD vehicle.
But for now, here are some of our favorite adventures that left us wanting more.
# 1. Exploring Sydney
Sydney is one of our favorite cities in the world, offering a mix of amazing weather, delicious food and world class cultural experiences. If we had to live in a city anywhere in the world, and we could afford it, Sydney might be our first choice. Some of our favorite experiences in Sydney included seeing a concert at the Sydney Opera House and visiting Bondi Beach where we completed the Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach Walk. We also have heard good things about climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, although we chose to do a helicopter flight over Sydney Harbor instead which was well worth it.
# 2. Exploring the Blue Mountains
The Blue Mountains are a beautiful region close to Sydney. The region is full of limestone cliffs and waterfalls and is one of the best places in the world to practice landscape photography. It is also a great place for rock climbing. While in the Blue Mountains, consider hiking the Grand Canyon and Ruined Castle Tracks.

# 3. Exploring Small Towns on the Coast of NSW and Queensland
One of our favorite experiences in NSW and Queensland was exploring the many small towns on the coast. An example of one of these towns was Noosa Heads, a small town on the coast of Queensland with great surfing including a beautiful point break in Noosa Heads National Park.
# 4. Overlanding on Fraser Island
K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) is the world’s second largest sand island. The island includes a variety of fascinating ecosystems including eucalyptus forests, mangrove forests, rainforests and sand dunes. It’s best explored with a 4WD vehicle. If you don’t have one, you can book a single or multi day tour with a local company. Some of our favorite experiences on the island included observing native Dingoes, overlanding on the island’s hard packed beaches and rough sand roads and swimming in Lake McKenzie, one of the most pristine lakes in the world.

# 5. Scuba Diving on the Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is one of the top scuba diving experiences in the world. The best way to explore the Great Barrier Reef is on a liveaboard. However, if you don’t want to commit to a liveaboard, there are nevertheless a number of great dive sites on the coast of Queensland including the SS Yongala dive which is considered by many to be the best wreck dive in the world.
# 6. Surfing on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts
The surfing on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts of NSW is famous. One of the things we liked most about the surfing on this coast was the fact that there are so many breaks that it is relatively uncrowded. In addition, it’s not as sharky as the surfing in other areas of Australia, including in particular on the West Coast of Australia.
# 7. Visiting the National Parks of Queensland and NSW
You could spend months exploring the many national parks in Queensland and NSW including Kosciuszko National Park and Mungo National Park in NSW and Carnarvon National Park, the Daintree Rainforest and Mount Barney National Park in Queensland.
# 8. Whale Watching off of Hervey Bay
Our whale watching trip from Hervey Bay was a great experience. At one point, a huge Humpback whale breached right in front of us.
