Dogs Without Borders
“No Dog Left Behind”
Crossing into El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua was… a little sketchy.
First, the vet in Guatemala told us it would cost $300 to get my health certification into these countries. Then he said it wasn’t really worth it. (Excuse me?) So, yeah—I had to cross some borders illegally.
It was not glamorous. I was crammed in the back seat behind a wall of backpacks and camera gear. The AC was blocked. It was hot. I kept getting told to “lay down” (annoying). All I really wanted was a Pepsi and some airflow.
Honestly, the air was so thick at times, I could smell the fear.

No Dog Left Behind
Luckily, it all worked out. In Nicaragua, we found a vet who was able to legalize me for all of the countries—including Costa Rica—for just $40. So now it’s official: I’m legal in eight different countries.
After dealing with the stress of being illegal in two, I feel for the other immigrant dogs out there.
I mean, really—what’s all the fuss about? I dream of a world where dogs can roam freely, every pup has a loving home, and no dog is left behind.
Maybe when a dog finally gets elected president…
Bernie’s Mountain Dog, anyone?
