Millionaire Moments

“In Zipolite: Mexico Pt. II”

This is one of the most memorable quotes we’ve heard on our trip so far. It came from Rafael, a man originally from Germany, who was sleeping under a shade structure on Zipolite Beach in Southern Oaxaca for 50 pesos a night. We were paying 55 pesos to park our rig just a few steps away.

Rafael, older and clearly weathered by life, was dealing with persistent back pain. We tried to help ease it with a foam roller, sharing a moment of connection over a shared stretch of sand. And as we watched the sunrise and sunset from our beach chairs on this beautiful, relatively undiscovered beach, his words landed.

It reminded me of a quote from Tim Ferris:
“People don’t want to be millionaires. They want to experience what they believe only millions can buy.”

In Ziplolite: Mexico Pt. II

For us, “living like a millionaire” doesn’t involve flashy hotels or fine dining. It means carving out time for some of the best adventures the world has to offer — and sometimes, it means doing absolutely nothing in a place that asks nothing of you. It’s having the luxury of time to simply sit, breathe, reflect, and reset in a place like Zipolite.

Of course, these experiences are layered with complex realities — inequalities in power, privilege, and access. We hold those truths too. But in moments like this one, shared on the beach with Rafael, we’re reminded that connection, simplicity, and presence are some of the most valuable currencies we have.

Stay tuned for our upcoming Oaxaca trip report, where we’ll share more about Zipolite — an idyllic nudist beach on the southern coast of Oaxaca that just might steal your heart (and your clothes).
