Our Nicaragua Favorite Adventures

Since there was an uprising going on during our overland trip through Nicaragua, we didn’t have a lot of time to explore a lot of the country.

However, here are a few adventures we’d recommend pursuing if you visit when the political climate has calmed down.

# 1. Exploring Granada

Granada is a charming colonial city offering several nearby excursions including a trip to Apoyo Lagoon, a volcanic crater lake outside of the city.

# 2. Exploring Masaya Volcano National Park

Masaya Volcano National park is Nicaragua’s first and largest national park, offering the opportunity to crawl through lava tubes and observe the glowing lava in the crater of the volcano. The park can be reached via a day trip from Granada or Managua.

# 3. Exploring Ometepe Island

Ometepe Island is a fascinating island formed by two active volcanoes. One of our favorite adventures on the island was hiking up Volcán Concepción, an active stratovolcano that forms the northwest part of the island. We’d also recommend going swimming at Ojo de Agua, a natural spring where we camped for the night.

# 4. Exploring Somoto Canyon

We’ve heard good things about Somoto Canyon in Northwestern Nicaragua but have not been there ourselves. This, like the Rio San Juan and Selva Negra are some of the more remote adventures in Nicaragua.

# 5. Exploring Rio San Juan

The Rio San Juan region is a more remote region in southeastern Nicaragua offering great wildlife watching, including in the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve.

# 6. Surfing in San Juan Del Sur

San Juan Del Sur provides some of the best surfing in Central America. There are several breaks that you can drive to in the area, including Playa Hermosa and Playa Maderas. In addition, several world class breaks can be reached by boat from Playa Hermosa. One option is to stay at Mango Rosa, a comfortable and fun resort down the road from Playa Hermosa which offers various surf packages and rents boards if you just want to go surfing at Playa Hermosa for the day.

# 7. Wildlife Watching in the Selva Negra

The Selva Negra is a cloud forest reserve in the highlands north of Managua offering amazing biodiversity, birdwatching and hiking.
