“Nuts and Bolts”
1. Think About Your Goals
Set clear goals for your trip—whether it’s to seek epic adventures, relax and recharge, or something in between. Your goals are your compass; they should guide your itinerary.
2. Pick Your Travel Companions Carefully
I’m lucky to be married to an amazing person—Leah—who not only shares many of my interests but supports the ones she doesn’t. Choose a travel partner who elevates your adventure. And if you don’t have one, don’t hesitate to go solo—I did for years before meeting Leah!

Nuts and Bolts
3. Develop a High-Level Itinerary
Start with a solid guidebook—Lonely Planet has been a favorite of mine. While designed for backpackers, they offer consistent advice and often highlight off-the-beaten-path gems suited to overlanders. Then, refine your plan by tapping into insights from locals and fellow travelers (blogs and websites are gold). Remember not to over-plan. Some of the magic of adventure lies in spontaneous detours.
4. Trust Your Gut
With experience, you’ll develop a strong intuition about what makes a great adventure. Trust that instinct, even when something seems a bit challenging or risky—those could be the most rewarding moments of your trip.
5. Leverage Local Knowledge
Connect with an expat, local, or frequent traveler in each country you visit—someone who shares your interests. They can offer invaluable insights. Also, identify a few locals you can visit—or at least call if needed. Having a local lifeline offers both peace of mind and richer connections.
