The Summer I Almost Missed
“What Living Life in a Cone Taught Me”
This spring I got a bump on my leg. Everyone thought it was a tick including one doggie doctor that came to our home. The next thing I knew, I was on the metal table getting poked and prodded again. It was a tumor. A couple days later we went back to the same place. When I woke up, my world got smaller.
After stitches, staples, and an infection from the surgery, I’d been on several metal tables and a strict cone diet. My excitement had been reduced to potty breaks. Summer started and I began to worry. We’d already missed out on a lot of adventures.
Then one day the tails turned. The cone came off! Suddenly my world got big again; I mean, REALLY BIG.
I rode in floating boxes in the sky and I saw what birds could see. I climbed the biggest mountains, swam in the bluest lakes, and romped in snow on the biggest glacier. We even stayed at a campground with an agility course. By then, my brain was on steroids!

What Living Life in a Cone Taught Me
Even though the cone made my world smaller, it gave me a different perspective.
Maybe sometimes your world has to get smaller before you realize just how big it really is. For a while, I thought I was missing summer. Turns out, summer was just waiting for me.
